September 17th is “Constitution Day." It was established as a federal holiday in 2004 by the U.S. Congress to commemorate the date the U.S. Constitution was signed in 1787 and recognize the importance of our nation’s founding document.

Schools receiving federal funds are required to provide educational programming about the Constitution on or near the anniversary of its signing. The ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties’ Celebrate the Constitution! program was developed in 2007 to help local schools meet this requirement.

Originally, our volunteer presenters would visit classrooms to share their knowledge and insights about the Constitution with students. In 2020, the COVID-19 crisis prompted a reimagination of our Constitution Day program as an entirely digital initiative.

Rather than visiting classrooms, our volunteer presenters create non-partisan, educational videos about the U.S. Constitution for students across the nation. The expanded, online format allows us to offer meaningful digital content to teachers, students and the general public all year long!

Visit Create Your CTC! Video to learn how you can contribute to this initiative.
